Recherches cliniques et thérapeutiques sur l’épilepsie, l’hystérie et l’idiotie (1872-1906)

Désiré Magloire Bourneville publishes in the Recherches cliniques et thérapeutiques sur l’épilepsie, l’hystérie et l’idiotie very detailed reports on the activity of the Service des Enfants idiots, at the Salpêtrière first, then at Bicêtre, where he is appointed in 1879, and at the Fondation Vallée.

This publication relates in great detail, with numerous tables and statistics, the whole story of a specialized department. The first part of the annual delivery is progressively enhanced with building plans and hospital projects. The second part offers research on child pathology, in the tradition of Edouard Séguin, and articles of clinics, therapeutics and pathologic anatomy, illustrated with photographs and written by Bourneville and the house doctors of the department. Thus, a long article (84 pages) on the « treatment of epilepsy by hydrotherapy » is published in 1883.

This publication, stopped when Bourneville (1840-1909) retires, reflects the medical and social body of work left by this great reformer, also editor of the Progrès Médical, in the catalogue of which appears the Archives de neurologie and the Nouvelle iconographie de la Salpêtrière. Jean-Martin Charcot’s succession is ensured.
